As the festive season approaches, many of us will be enjoying nights out, social events and celebrations with friends and colleagues. While these occasions should be enjoyable, they can also bring increased risks. Historically, this period sees a rise in incidents involving violence, sexual offences and drink spiking.
Many organisations, venues and security providers are working together to help create safer environments and support initiatives aimed at preventing violence against women and girls. However, staying aware of potential risks remains important.
Who Criminals Often Target
Criminals are more likely to target individuals who are:
- Intoxicated or disoriented
- Alone or separated from friends
- Travelling on public transport late at night
- Walking through isolated or poorly lit areas
- In crowded venues where visibility and awareness are reduced
How to Keep Yourself Safe
A few simple precautions can help reduce risk and ensure everyone enjoys a safe night out:
- Stay with your friends and look out for one another throughout the evening.
- Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers.
- Keep to busy, well-lit areas and avoid becoming isolated.
- Consider carrying a personal alarm as an additional safety measure.
- Plan your journey home in advance and, where possible, travel with friends or arrange a lift.
- Ensure your phone is fully charged before heading out.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case anyone becomes separated.
- If you notice suspicious behaviour or feel uncomfortable, report it to venue staff, security personnel or the police immediately.
Ask for Angela
If you ever feel unsafe or find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, remember that many venues participate in the Ask for Angela initiative.
By approaching a member of staff and asking for Angela, you can discreetly signal that you need help. Trained staff will assist you in getting to a safe place, arranging transport, or helping you leave the situation safely without drawing attention to yourself.
Looking Out for Each Other
A safe night out starts with preparation, awareness and looking out for those around you. Whether you're attending a work event, meeting friends, or celebrating with family, taking a few simple precautions can help ensure everyone gets home safely.
Have fun, stay alert and look after one another this festive season.
