Katelyn Gordon Named Finalist in Women in Security Awards 2026

From Guest Service Assistant to Women in Security Awards finalist, Katelyn Gordon's journey is a reflection of the opportunities for progression within the security industry, and the impact dedicated professionals can have on the communities they serve.

Organised by Professional Security Magazine, the Women in Security Awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of women working across the security industry, recognising those who are making a positive impact through leadership, innovation and frontline excellence.

The nomination places Katelyn among some of the sector's most accomplished frontline professionals, highlighting the vital role security teams play in protecting people, businesses and public spaces.

As Duty Controller at Silverburn, Katelyn oversees the day-to-day operation of the Security Control Room, supporting the safety of guests, retailers and staff across the centre. Her role involves coordinating incidents, monitoring security systems, working closely with emergency services, and maintaining strong partnerships with organisations including Retailers Against Crime to support crime prevention and effective information sharing.

In addition to her operational responsibilities, Katelyn has helped strengthen collaboration between key partners across the retail security community, contributing to initiatives that enhance the safety and experience of everyone who visits and works at Silverburn.

Speaking about the achievement, Katelyn said:

"Being a woman in security means being able to bring my own strengths, perspective and leadership style to the industry. Security is a career open to everyone, and I am proud to have progressed from Guest Service Assistant to Duty Controller through hard work and personal development.

Being recognised as a finalist for a Women in Security Award is a real honour, and I hope it helps to show other women that there are fantastic opportunities to build a successful career within the industry."

Katelyn's passion for supporting and developing her team is one of the aspects of the role she enjoys most, alongside building relationships throughout the centre and with partner agencies. Her team describe her as dedicated, approachable and resilient, qualities that have helped her earn the respect of those she works alongside every day.

Creating opportunities for others has always been at the heart of Monica O'Brien's work. Now, that commitment has earned her national recognition.

Named a finalist in the Rising Star category at the 2026 Social Mobility (SOMO) Awards , Monica is being recognised for her contribution to social recruitment, inclusion and creating pathways into employment for those who may otherwise be overlooked.

The SOMOs celebrate organisations and individuals who are helping to break down barriers to employment and create pathways for people to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The nomination recognises Monica's contribution to advancing social mobility through her work at SecuriGroup and the positive impact she has made through social recruitment and inclusion initiatives.

While Monica joined the business in a recruitment-focused role, her position has evolved considerably over the years. Today, she plays a key role in driving SecuriGroup's social recruitment and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, helping to ensure opportunities are accessible to people who may otherwise be overlooked.

At the heart of that work is Secure Your Path, SecuriGroup's social recruitment programme, which was developed to support wider communities, strengthen society and connect individuals facing barriers to work with meaningful employment opportunities.

For Monica, the most rewarding part of the role is seeing the direct impact those opportunities can have on people's lives.

"I think the most rewarding part of my job is getting to watch people come into genuine, meaningful employment, particularly from communities which are typically overlooked within the labour market."

One of the most powerful examples of this came through SecuriGroup's partnership with Down's Syndrome Scotland , which helped candidates secure paid employment opportunities at one of Scotland's largest sporting events.

The initiative gave participants the chance to gain valuable work experience, build confidence and showcase their abilities in a professional environment, while highlighting the positive impact inclusive recruitment can have on individuals, families and communities.

"Seeing the photos, hearing the feedback and speaking with the parents really shows us why we engage in social value and the benefit it can have on wider communities."

Reflecting on what she considers her biggest achievement, Monica said:

Opening New Routes into Technology Careers: The Impact of Our Partnership with Code First Girls

Four women hired into technology roles. One already progressing into leadership. More than 40 women supported through training opportunities.

Those are just some of the results delivered through SecuriGroup ' s partnership with Code First Girls , which is helping create new pathways into technology careers while strengthening our growing technology team.

Scotland's technology sector is booming, yet women still hold fewer than one in five technical roles. Recognising both the challenge and the opportunity, we partnered with Code First Girls to help open the door to more women pursuing careers in technology.

The success of the partnership was recently celebrated during a visit from Code First Girls CEO, Anna Brailsford MBE, to our Glasgow Central Support Office, where the team reflected on the impact of the programme and explored how the partnership can continue creating opportunities for women in technology.

As our technology function continued to grow, we knew we needed more than technical skills alone. We wanted people with different perspectives, real-world experience, and the ability to challenge conventional thinking.

Traditional recruitment routes often produced the same candidate profiles. Through Code First Girls, we were able to connect with talented women looking to transition into technology from entirely different industries.

The four women recruited through the programme joined us from backgrounds spanning hospitality, finance, insurance and the charity sector. None had followed a traditional computer science route into the industry, but all brought transferable skills, determination and a strong desire to learn.

Today, they support the technology that underpins operations for more than 4,500 operatives across the UK, contributing across software development, data engineering and business intelligence functions.

George Dunlop, Director of Technology at SecuriGroup, said:

"Before working with Code First Girls, we primarily recruited through platforms such as Indeed or via recruitment agencies. Candidate quality could be inconsistent, both in terms of skills and experience, as well as how easily individuals adapted to our culture and ways of working.

Code First Girls helped address these challenges by providing motivated, capable candidates who demonstrated both humility and a willingness to learn."

The impact was felt quickly.

Within their first six months, one of the hires contributed to a key technology development that was subsequently deployed as part of our support for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games operation.

Collectively, the four recruits now contribute to systems and technology that support major client operations across the UK.

Jordan Coyle, Lead Frontend Software Developer at SecuriGroup, said:

"The Code First Girls hires I manage are hungry for knowledge. It's been great to see how their experience from non-tech roles filters into SecuriGroup and brings different perspectives to the team.

We've worked with other talent firms before and the experience has been mixed. The aftercare and ongoing development provided by Code First Girls has been very important."

Beyond recruitment, ongoing coaching has played a key role in helping new team members develop confidence, strengthen technical skills, and accelerate their progression.

Each hire was enrolled in the Code First Girls technical coaching programme, receiving personalised support from experienced coaches aligned to their role and development goals.

That additional support was estimated to save between three and five hours per week per person while helping them become effective contributors more quickly.

George added:

"The technical coaching provided by the Code First Girls teams delivers real strategic value for our organisation. It gave the hires a strong foundation, enabling them to contribute more quickly while continuing to develop towards a more independent and impactful way of working."

For the women who joined SecuriGroup through the programme, the opportunity provided a route into an industry they may never previously have considered.

Rebecca Stewart, Data Engineer at SecuriGroup, said:

"I was looking for a career change and moving into data felt like a natural next step. My role at SecuriGroup has been a steep learning curve, but I've learned a lot very quickly. The team is really friendly and approachable, which has made settling in much easier.

I'm excited to apply what I've learned to building a data warehouse and creating more reliable, impactful data solutions."

The long-term value of the partnership is already clear. One of our earliest hires through the programme has progressed into a leadership position within the Business Intelligence team, helping shape our data strategy and supporting continued business growth.

Q&A With Alex Bell

Looking back on your 16 years with SecuriGroup, what have been some of the highlights?

A huge highlight has always been my time working on the frontline with the Events team. I've had the opportunity to deliver security at landmark events including the Liverpool International Music Festival, Southbank Centre New Year's Eve celebrations and the UCI Cycling World Championships.

Being able to travel across the country representing the organisation, while progressing from non-licensed stewarding through to senior management, is something I’ll always be proud of.

Another standout has been seeing our technology department evolve. I've had the privilege of being part of its growth from a single part-time support role into a 13-strong multidisciplinary team. Today, we're not only supporting the business, but designing and delivering the systems, infrastructure, and tools that help our team do their jobs every day.

Above all, the biggest highlight has been the people. From the breakroom to the boardroom, I've worked alongside people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Hearing their stories, sharing experiences, and supporting each other over the years has been incredibly rewarding.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role as Head of Technology?

I'm looking forward to making sure our technology genuinely supports the people doing the work.

Having started on the frontline myself, my approach is based on common sense. That means listening to what people need, removing unnecessary complexity, and delivering reliable technology that helps them get on with the job.

Technology should make life easier for people, and that's what I'll continue to focus on in this role.

What advice would you give to people looking to progress their careers at SecuriGroup?

There are two things that stand out to me.

First, care about the standard of your work. Focus on the things you can control and look for ways to make them better. Small improvements, professional attitudes and attention to detail all add up over time.

Second, say yes to new experiences. Put yourself forward for different opportunities, visit new locations, and get to know people across the business. SecuriGroup is built on relationships, and people remember the people who step up, support others, and get involved when it matters.

Alex's career journey is a fantastic example of what's possible through hard work, commitment and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

SecuriGroup and Down’s Syndrome Scotland break barriers at one of Scotland's biggest sporting events

A partnership between SecuriGroup and Down’s Syndrome Scotland is helping people with Down’s syndrome secure paid roles at one of Scotland's highest-profile sporting events, Glasgow 2026, challenging long-standing barriers to employment and creating new opportunities within the events and security sector.

The initiative sees candidates gaining hands-on experience through paid event roles in a major event environment while building skills, confidence and independence.

The programme comes at a time when employment inequalities remain significant across the UK. Government figures show that the employment rate for disabled people is 53.1%, compared with 81.6% for non-disabled people.

For people with learning disabilities, the gap is even greater. Fewer than 5% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment, despite 86% of those without a paid job saying they would like one.

Against that backdrop, the partnership between SecuriGroup and Down’s Syndrome Scotland is creating paid employment opportunities for individuals and the chance to gain experience within Scotland's events and security sector, while demonstrating the value of a more inclusive workforce.

The individuals recruited through this partnership are not only contributing to the visitor experience but also developing transferable workplace skills that can support future careers.

Shaping Futures: Celebrating Our Apprentices This National Apprenticeship Week

At SecuriGroup , apprenticeships are more than a starting point, they're a launchpad for meaningful, long-term careers. Our in‑house Apprenticeship Programme was created to offer an alternative pathway into the security industry, giving people the chance to earn while they learn, gain industry‑recognised qualifications, and build real‑world experience from day one.

We're proud to support individuals at every stage of their journey, whether they join straight from school, transition from another career, or study at university while training with us. Our apprentices go on to achieve incredible things, from becoming security trainers to winning national awards, proving that with the right support, the opportunities are endless.

Creating the first Security Apprenticeship

With the aim to tackle the security officer shortages in the sector, SecuriGroup alongside the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and Skills for Security launched the UK's first apprenticeship for frontline security professionals. The Level 5 SVQ Apprenticeship in Providing Security Officer Services was first launched in Scotland in 2021 and is now available UK-wide.1 The programme which was developed internally by SecuriGroup and accredited by Highfield, covers fire safety, mental health awareness, conflict management, counter terrorism and safeguarding . The programme continues to grow in popularity with hundreds of people already completing their apprenticeship and starting their career in security.

Finlay McQuade – Events Steward

Finlay works as an Event Steward for our Events Department whilst completing his apprenticeship. Since joining he has demonstrated remarkable growth, quickly establishing himself as an indispensable member of the team. His commitment to professional development is evident through his completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work course and the Door Supervisors course, earning his SIA licence. Finlay said one of the highlights of his apprenticeship has been 'learning how to correctly diffuse situations using PI techniques, building confidence and real-world skills on the job ". When asked what he would say to anyone unsure about an apprenticeship, he said "my advice to anyone considering it is go for it " . Finlay was even shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year at the BSIA Awards.

Erin Burt - Security Trainer

Erin works as a Security Trainer for our in-house training academy. She demonstrates the broad and varied opportunities available with a security apprenticeship. Upon completing the programme and proudly earning her badge, Erin progressed into a new career as a Security Trainer. She credits the programme with giving her the foundation she needed to take that next step, sharing that it 'gave me the skills, confidence and experience to move into my role as a security trainer '.

Terry McJimsey - ISOC Operative

Terry is another example of the different career paths you can take after a security apprenticeship. After completing his apprenticeship, Terry began working as a n Operative in our Intelligence and Security Operations Centre (ISOC) , where he plays a key role in ensuring the safety and security of client assets, personnel and premises . Terry's hard work and dedication was recognised at the 2024 BSIA awards where he won Apprentice of the Year. When asked about his thoughts on the programme, Terry commented 'the apprenticeship opened the door to the security industry for me '.

2025 Outstanding Security Performance Awards

SecuriGroup was proud to be recognised across a range of categories at the 2025 UK Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs), with six finalist shortlistings highlighting the strength of our people, teams and wider business initiatives. The shortlist recognised individual excellence, team performance and our commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact.

Among the finalists were three exceptional security officers whose professionalism and dedication make a difference every day.

Youssef Vernege-Fanus was shortlisted for Outstanding Security Officer in recognition of his exceptional customer service, professionalism and leadership at a prestigious London site. Known for consistently exceeding expectations, Youssef has received outstanding client feedback for his calm, welcoming approach and commitment to delivering a first-class experience for everyone he encounters.

Neville McGlashan was recognised for a remarkable career spanning more than a decade at the Royal Albert Hall. Affectionately known as the "10-Star General", Neville was shortlisted for his unwavering professionalism, mentorship of new colleagues and the trust he has built with clients, visitors and the local community.

Derek Littlejohns earned recognition for his leadership and commitment to developing others, having successfully rebuilt and strengthened a security team while maintaining exceptionally high operational standards and supporting career progression for colleagues.

The Silverburn Security Team was shortlisted for Outstanding Security Team, recognising their proactive approach to tackling organised retail crime, protecting visitors and supporting one of Scotland's busiest retail destinations. Through strong partnerships, intelligence sharing and a customer-focused approach, the team continues to deliver outstanding results in a challenging environment.

SecuriGroup was also shortlisted for the Outstanding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative for our Secure Your Path programme, which helps create opportunities for young people and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds seeking careers in the security industry. The initiative reflects our belief that a diverse workforce creates stronger teams and better outcomes for the communities we serve.

Completing the list was a finalist place in the Outstanding Sustainability Award , recognising the progress we have made in embedding sustainability throughout our operations. As Security Operations & Intelligence Centre Manager, she provides strategic and operational oversight of our Intelligence & Security Operations Centre (ISOC), ensuring our teams remain connected, informed, and ready to respond when it matters most.

Working around the clock to support our people and clients, the SOIC plays a critical role in monitoring incidents, managing escalations, coordinating responses, and analysing intelligence that helps identify and mitigate potential risks before they become larger issues. Under Sharrie's leadership, the team helps maintain service continuity across a diverse portfolio of contracts while supporting the safety and wellbeing of our officers, clients, and communities.

With more than 3,000 colleagues working across the UK, the volume of uniforms required to support our operations is significant. Ensuring these garments are managed responsibly is an important part of reducing our environmental impact.

Through our uniform recycling programme, we have successfully recycled more than two tonnes of uniforms, preventing materials from ending up in landfill and giving them a new purpose. Alongside this, we have introduced garments made from recycled materials, helping to reduce the environmental footprint of our supply chain while maintaining the professional standards our clients expect.

With software updates come security patches. These ensure your device is protected against the latest threats. So, whatever your method of online shopping, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone, make sure you have the latest updates installed on your device.

It can be easy to get lured into shopping on new websites when they are offering good Black Friday deals. Be mindful of the information you share and avoid saving payment details. Where possible, use secure payment methods such as PayPal.

Many organisations, venues and security providers are working together to help create safer environments and support initiatives aimed at preventing violence against women and girls. However, staying aware of potential risks remains important.

Who Criminals Often Target

Criminals are more likely to target individuals who are:

Intoxicated or disoriented
Alone or separated from friends
Travelling on public transport late at night
Walking through isolated or poorly lit areas
In crowded venues where visibility and awareness are reduced

How to Keep Yourself Safe

A few simple precautions can help reduce risk and ensure everyone enjoys a safe night out:

Stay with your friends and look out for one another throughout the evening.
Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers.

As part of the Mental Health Foundation's Tea & Talk campaign, colleagues from across the business visited teams at client sites to spend time with frontline colleagues, share a tea or coffee, and create space for open and honest conversations.

The initiative was a reminder that sometimes the smallest interactions can make the biggest difference. Whether discussing work, wellbeing, personal challenges or simply catching up, taking the time to listen and connect helps build stronger, more supportive workplaces.

Creating Space for Conversation

For many people, discussing mental health can feel difficult. Busy schedules, remote working and the demands of daily life can make it easy to put wellbeing on the back burner.

Tea & Talk encourages people to pause, check in with one another and have meaningful conversations in a relaxed and informal setting. Through SecuriGroup Academy, we provide our colleagues with access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities designed to help them succeed in their current roles while preparing for future career progression.

Over the past year alone, more than 3,300 delegates have taken part in training and development programmes across the business. One colleague who embodies the value of continuous learning is Specialist Service Lead, Brian McLaughlin.

Recently, Brian completed specialist training with Intelligencia Training, the UK's most experienced provider of vocational intelligence training. The programme covered Intelligence Theory, Applied Intelligence Analysis and the Communication of Intelligence Products, providing an opportunity to refresh existing knowledge, develop new skills and further enhance the expertise he brings to our Intelligence Department.

Neil brings a wealth of experience from his distinguished career as Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service and former head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK. He is the only officer to have held the top three positions in Counter Terrorism Policing and was awarded the Queen's Police Medal in 2016. Neil led the operational response to the 2017 terror attacks and, in 2018, succeeded Sir Mark Rowley to become the first Asian to lead the UK's Counter Terrorism Policing organisation.

In July 2021, Neil took on the role of Director for the Strategic Command Course, policing's most senior leadership programme. He continues to serve as a trustee of Police Care UK and as the Patron of TINYg, an international non-profit counter terrorism research body for the private sector. Neil remains active in writing, lecturing, and advising on matters of police, criminal justice, and national security.

Claiming Tax Back for Your SIA Licence

Did you know that you can claim tax back if you paid for your SIA licence?

If you pay your own licence fee, you will be able to claim tax relief against your taxable income - for example, if you pay the basic rate of tax, the relief is currently worth £44.

For specific roles, some people may need more than one licence; in such cases the second licence will also be discounted by 50%

Understanding The Challenges of CCTV Monitoring

The role of CCTV surveillance can often be a crucial function, from spotting suspicious and unattended luggage, to identifying hostile reconnaissance.

When dealing with potentially critical situations, such as identifying suspicious activity and hostiles searching for vulnerabilities in a security system, the importance of an effective CCTV service is clear.

It is clear that motivated, attentive and observant security staff can form a highly-effective deterrent, but when the amount and type of information that an operator can take in is limited, how can you best prevent errors from occurring ?

Recognising Human Limitations

The first step is in recognising and understanding that operators cannot, and do not, see everything.

We are limited in how much information we can process at any point in time, and research shows that tasks which require similar types of processing (e.g. listening to speech and reading, or two tasks that both need visual processing) are particularly problematic.

So what factors need to be considered?

External factors reduce the likelihood of an operator spotting suspicious behaviour :

Number of screens monitored
Method of monitoring (split screens vs single screen views)
Level of alertness
Room environment (too hot, too cold, too bright, too dim)
Field of view of cameras
Refresh rate / bandwidth issues on cameras

Internal factors minimising the detection of suspicious behaviour, or potential problems :

Limitations in observation due to divided attention, fatigue and distraction
Limitations in recalling an event
Personal beliefs and biases
Previous experience and knowledge

Maximise the opportunity of suspicious behaviour being detected :

Encourage teamwork between operators and security officers on the ground, with the team on the ground acting as an extension of the eyes and ears of the control room
Encourage reporting anything suspicious from other stakeholders in the environment, such as cleaners. This is especially important on sites that cover a large area as the more 'eyes on the ground' the better
Log details as soon as they are received, from radio messages or phone calls, not after an incident has played out. Humans have limitations in memory and their recall is easily influenced and tainted, making logging during evolving incidents an essential training task

Remaining Vigilant

Some control room tasks may need to be divided up on the basis of length of time for which an operator can continue to effectively carry out a particular task.

This is especially critical for monitoring tasks that require intense and sustained attention, because as time goes on, this attention may wane, and therefore detection of a person, object or other change in the environment may become less likely or slower.

Human attention span is limited, and tasks that require intensive sustained vigilance such as monitoring CCTV feeds for critical security breaches should be covered in brief shifts of around 20 minutes.

The best practice approach is to rotate tasks within a site, ensuring that the team maintain an understanding of 'norms' for the entire site, without viewing the same area for many hours a day which leads to gaps in cognitive awareness due to boredom.

Situational Awareness

It is important to be aware and have an understanding of the relevant aspects of a dynamic environment in order to best facilitate an appropriate course of action.

What does this mean for a control room? Knowing what's going on, where your resources are, and what to do about it.

Preparation must also be made for the transition from under-load to overload, which occurs when individuals or teams suddenly need to deal with a critical situation.

This can cause confusion as they are unable to cope with the sudden increase in demand for human cognition and leads to stress and reactive, sometimes unreasoned, decision making.

This is more often observed with less experienced security personnel.

Shift handover/briefing/debriefing are essential in maintaining situational awareness between operators in the control room. It is important to ensure an understanding is achieved between the departing and incoming operator of any incidents that may have occurred during the shift, any incidents that are ongoing, and generally anything that is 'out of the norm' for the environment.

Training & Understanding Processes

Regular training, refresher sessions and exercises are very beneficial in maintaining an effective CCTV service.

For example, camera patrols help operators practise the skills required when tracking a person of interest on camera, and improves familiarity with the site and spatial awareness.

Exercises are strongly recommended within the control room:

Factor in exercises from the outset to create an atmosphere of continued vigilance.
Use different time frames and different conditions.
Ensure that lessons learned are captured after exercises.
Ensure accepted standard operating procedures are assessed as a result of any learning.
Use feedback as a positive training tool.
Build a culture of reporting and responding by encouraging communication and removing barriers.

SecuriGroup and the SBRC, previously known as the Scottish Business Crime Centre, have a long-standing relationship and 2013 was the third time SecuriGroup has sponsored the annual event.

Attended by a number of high profile figures, and with speeches from Graeme Pearson MSP, Mandy Haeburn-Little, SBRC Director and Deputy Chief Constable of Police Scotland, Rose Fitzpatrick, the evening had a vibrant and bright atmosphere. Following SecuriGroup Director, and sitting Peer, Baroness Ruth Henig CBE’s well-received speech on SecuriGroup’s relationship with the SBRC and the future of Security Industry Authority regulation, time was afforded to network and further debate the evening’s discussions.
