UK Government Provides Grants for Flood Prevention

Support announced for Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures for businesses and homes.

Following the recent floods, the Government has recently announced that flood hit homes and businesses will be able to receive up to £5,000 to help protect themselves from future flooding.

The grants will be available from the end of November, with homeowners and businesses being advised to contact their local authorities.

Available through local authorities, the grants will help properties become more resilient to flooding by paying for the installation of a variety of Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures which will increase resistance to damage from flooding in the future. Examples of suitable PFR could be putting in flood doors and raising electrics.

Property Flood Resilience (PFR) is currently critical because there are lots of property owners in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire who were affected by flooding. Many property owners will be liaising with their insurance companies about the reinstatement process.

Being flooded is devastating, but this is a good opportunity for property owners and insurers alike to install PFR measures into properties.

What are Property Flood Resilience Measures?

PFR measures give householders or businesses the tools to manage the impact that flooding has on their lives. Property flood resilience means taking action to stop water entering a property, or if it does, reducing the level of damage it causes.

Examples include installing airbrick covers, or using flood barriers to stop water coming through doorways.

For more information please visit or Property Flood Resilience E-magazine which includes stories from homes and businesses who have made adaptations to their properties to help them recover quickly after a flood.

PFR measures are an important part of our response to existing and predicted flood risk. Take up of PFR in the UK is low and information and guidance is fragmented. Both these things are barriers to helping to protect properties.
