January SMM: European Championships & MCR Mentoring

For the SecuriGroup Senior Management Meeting in January, we were treated to the input of two guest speakers: Kenny Graham on behalf of the European Championships 2018, and Donna Cunningham of MCR Pathways.

We talked to both of them about their organisations and the presentations they delivered, and we invite you to read their responses below.

European Championships 2018 - Kenny Graham

In the summer of 2018 Europe's top athletes will compete in the inaugural European Championships – an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together some of the continent's leading sports. Taking place for the first time in 2018, the European Championships will be a new highlight on the global sporting calendar.

As part of the event around 3,025 athletes will compete in Scotland and broadcast to a potential television audience of up to 1.03 billion people – with many more watching across digital channels.

I am delighted that the security for all Non-Competition Venues as well as 3 Competition Venues will be provided by SecuriGroup. I observed SecuriGroup conduct the security operation at the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green and was greatly impressed with both their appearance and professionalism.

The stewards were smartly dressed and engaged with the public in a friendly and helpful manner and displayed all the attributes I require for the European Championships Glasgow 2018.

From an operational security perspective, ensuring a safe and secure environment for athletes and spectators over the course of the Championships is a challenge. In preparation, the Glasgow 2018 Security Team have worked tirelessly to produce Venue Security Plans for both Competition and Non-Competition venues.

Although the National Threat Level is currently at "Severe", we are working towards a Moderate threat level for the Championships, supported by a robust security operation. This includes 100% bag and person search to prevent any prohibited or restricted item entering the venues.

This operation is also to provide the public with a reassurance that they are entering a safe and secure environment.

As Head of Security for the Championships I relish the challenge that lies ahead and look forward to working closely with SecuriGroup to ensure that, yet again, we produce a positive spectator experience in a safe and secure environment.

My idea of a successful Championships is that when it is all over they are talking about an amazing spectacle and there is absolutely no mention of security.

MCR Pathways - Donna Cunningham

MCR Pathways is a school-based mentoring programme, supporting care-experienced and disadvantaged young people to realise their full potential. Our vision is that disadvantaged young people will have the same educational outcomes, career opportunities and life chances as any other young person.

Founded in 2007, the programme now supports over 1,000 young people aged between 12 to 18 in all thirty Glasgow secondary schools.

Enormous thanks to Russel Kerr for mentoring one of our talented care-experienced young people. By giving your time as Russel has, you can change a life forever!

Thank you to Russel and SecuriGroup - Organisations like SecuriGroup play such a vital role with MCR. By supporting your mentor staff, and helping them visit their young people, they are making change for the better!

For these young people relationships and role models matter and simply by devoting 50 minutes a week to listen, build a trusting relationship and help a young person to find their talent, people can make a life changing difference.

Results have been exceptional, reinforcing that mentored students are more likely to stay on longer at school and achieve positive destinations thereafter.

Where previously 48.8% of the city's most disadvantaged and care experienced young people progressed to college, university or a job, now 81% do.
